Nice write up des. I love this line.
"Like most fun projects I've been involved in Bigulo started off as 800 lines of broken code, that we were always told that "anyone could have written". But we did, and that's usually the difference."
Great write-up. Well done on being pragmatic and spotting the right time to get out.
One of our research companies spent millions of dollars creating a business simulation which trained financial professionals how to use new accounting principles. ,
Congrats Des, you deserve it. Great article too, love the lessons. Inspiring.
Congratulations Des, I enjoyed the post... I second Ben's liking of the line:
"Like most fun projects I've been involved in Bigulo started off as 800 lines of broken code, that we were always told that "anyone could have written". But we did, and that's usually the difference." And I also like "You're better off doing something, than sitting around complaining." - Niamh.
Hi Des,
Excellent post and congrats on your sale. It's the first time I visit your blog. I liked most of the lessons and find this one stricking: "If you can't imagine any user paying you money, then they won't" Perfect! Definitely coming back to your blog
"Amount of sale: I love my job at Contrast. But even if I didn't, I'd still be showing up there tomorrow. Put it that way."
Does that mean we still have to BYOB at your next office knees up? Congrats Des, its lovely to get paid for something you made out of your own head.
Congrats Des and thanks for taking the time to share the whole story. It's a great read and the lessons are wise words indeed!
Well done on letting go Des.
Congrats on getting some cash out of an idea. I think it's well deserved as I think you put a lot of time into bigulo.
Congratulations and thanks for sharing all the lessons. I think they're really valuable and applicable to many different fields.
"You're better off doing something, than sitting around complaining. " Absolutely.
Congratulations Des.
You post is excellent and your website is a great idea. As someone who has stopped complaining and started doing I can relate to this post greatly. I would like to make some points though. It is no mean feat to set up a web site / application that garnered so much pageviews. I think that you may have undersold the project based on your comments. It seems that what is lacking is a business model (something that theprivateequiteer blogged about recently). One can always find business models given enough time, and in the world of web startups I think having so much traffic may give you the time (look at the Twitter example). Also, if you didn't retain any upside based on what may happen in the future, you also undersold yourself. I know that corporate financiers (even masked ones) are generally viewed on a parallel with pirates by people in the software world, but they can be valuable when one posseses an entity with as much proof of concept as Bigulo. It would be great to discuss this with you in more detail - let me know if you would be amenable to this.
I can't imagine how this flew under my radar for so long.
Congratulations Des! Be sure to think of us when you're buying a yacht with all that money!
Congrats Des and excellent blog post with some lovely nuggets of wisdom. My favourite? Like the the first commentator - "Like most fun projects I've been involved in Bigulo started off as 800 lines of broken code, that we were always told that "anyone could have written". But we did, and that's usually the difference."
